    Simulation modelling of call flow process delays in a cellular network
    This paper discusses on the use of discrete simulation model to design and analyse the cellular network. The conceptual network model was developed to understand the call flow processes using simulation software ARENA 9.0. The model was analysed for major bottleneck processes under various scenarios including normal traffic intensity, worst day traffic intensity and ideal day traffic intensity. The various performance parameters of cellular services which are measured includes: value added time (VAT) in the system, non-value added time (NVAT) in the system, number of calls request denied, number of calls dropped and call duration. The work includes the adaptation of the simulation model using ARENA to analyse cellular networks. The performance analysis reveals a large percentage of the time in the call set up processes is spent on non-value added activities. Recommendations for improvements in the call set up processes have been proposed for future consideration along with action points for improving operational efficiency.     ;
    This paper is the result of a work carried out in analyzing the performance of a two stage supply chain network (SCN). The work has been undertaken at two electronic component manufacturing companies. Company A, a sister concern of an electronic company, manufactures primary components namely - deflection yokes, fly back transformers and tuners. The Company B, comprising of three subsidiary business units, is a second tier supplier to an electronic product company and a dedicated supplier to Company A. They manufacture plastic components like bobbins, resin cases and tube cases, all of which are used as components for the production of yokes and transformers. After studying the existing system, the objectives set were to reduce the supply chain lead-time at Company A, and reduction of inventory levels at Company B. A model was developed using ARENA, a simulation software package for company A. The results included a reduction of 32% in the lead-time for fulfilling an order at company A. The delivery performance to commitment date also increased to a high of 76% from the earlier 20%. Company B on the other hand, had 40-50% reduction in raw material inventories. The finished goods inventories came down to 1-1.5 days of supply from an earlier figure of 8-14 days of supply in company B.

    Traffic Sign Recognition (TSR) is one of the most sought-after topics in computer vision, mostly due to the increasing scope and advancements in self-driving cars. In our study, we attempt to implement a TSR system that helps a driver stay alert during driving by providing information about the various traffic signs encountered. We will be looking at a working model that classifies the traffic signs and gives output in the form of an audio message. Our study will be focused on traffic sign detection and recognition on Indian roads. A dataset of Indian road traffic signs was created, based upon which our deep learning model will work. The developed model was deployed on NVIDIA Jetson Nano using YOLOv4 architecture, giving an accuracy in the range of 54.6876.55% on YOLOv4 architecture. The YOLOv4-Tiny model with DeepStream implementation achieved an FPS of 32.5, which is on par with real-time detection requirements. Universiti Putra Malaysia Press.

    Selection of retailers in B2B commerce is a challenging exercise for companies involved in online businesses. The selection of best pair of retailer and manufacturer, there are constraints to be considered. The constraints are divided into hard constraints, soft constraints and hybrid constraints. These constraints are priority attributes which are considered when manufacturing the product. By using extensive game with perfect information the selection of the retailer and manufacturer is done. Matlab is used as an analytical tool for selection of suppliers under two kinds of models. The first one is a generic model, in which two retailers are selected for doing business and other is n-retailer model, in which n number of retailers are selected for doing the business. 2017 IEEE.

    Design thinking, having applications in many fields, is emerging to be a pragmatic technique for facilitating Human Centred Design (HCD), a modern-day necessity, through a well-defined systematic process. This paper presents a case study detailing the application of design thinking principles to approach and develop solutions for the visually challenged to recognize the denomination of Indian currencies. Throughout the paper, specific implementations of design thinking principles have been detailed with emphasis on the key takeaways from the various stages. A comprehensive review of our approach compared to existing and unconventional applications has been provided to underline the importance of incorporating design thinking into emergent consumer-oriented solutions. A lot of research has been done in developing denomination classification models, however, there seems to be a lack of solutions designed through the perspective of a blind person who plays the critical factor in determining effectiveness once deployed. The design procedure helped us realize the importance of developing a simple user-friendly interface with a single input button and audio relays to guide the blind user during operation. Establishing a good platform for interaction and feedback was found to be critical in helping us modify and prioritize aspects such as achieving a low false-positive percentage and the addition of a high threshold Softmax function which made the solution design effective. The Author(s) 2021.

    A medium scale Auto Component manufacturing unit produces Link, Valve, Motor Piston, CAM shaft and Universal joint. The initial study revealed that 80% of total defects were due to link component. The 1500 parts / day of link is produced. The work carried out focused on improving quality of link using Define, Measure, Analyze, Improve, Control [DMAIC] methodology. A supplier, Inputs, Process, Outputs, Customers [SIPOC] and High level process mapping was used as tools. There were 11 Critical To Quality [CTQ] parameters identified. Low sigma value for outer diameter was traced by conducting Process Capability Studies. Causes for Low Process Capability [Cp] & Process Performance [Cpk] values were determined through brainstorming. Failure Modes and Effects Analysis [FMEA] was also used to understand effects of different parameters and methods to control. The outcome of the work improved sigma level for outer diameter increased from 1.96 to 4.83. 2013 IEEE.

    Surface passivation of n-type Crystalline Silicon wafer using thin dielectric films is an important and major factor in improving photovoltaic performance of HIT solar cells. In this study, Numerical simulation was carried out by using AFORS-HET simulation software in which energy band diagram with and without surface passivation (a-Si:H(i)) was investigated and the highest conduction band offset obtained on n type c-Si wafer is 0.85 eV which is comparatively higher than p-type c-Si wafer which was reported between 0.1 and 0.15 eV. Performance of HIT solar cell with passivation layer is simulated and obtained efficiency of 12.9% by incorporating actual conditions to compare with experimentally obtained data. It has been understood that applying an effective dielectric passivation of silicon surface resulted with high open circuit voltage (Voc) and low surface recombination lead to an increase of cell efficiency by 1.1% (from 11.8 to 12.9%). Also, the simulated results shows that to obtain good conversion efficiency Defect density of interface (Dit) should be lower than 1x1011 cm?2eV?1. Validation of the simulation results is done by conducting PECVD experiments for optimizing the amorphous silicon passivation to a layer thickness down to 15 nm. HIT Solar cells have been developed, using the optimum layer of passivation, and their performance have been studied. An improvement in the minority charge carrier lifetime of ~53 s (from 215 to 268 ?s) and on the other hand reduction in the surface recombination velocity of ~ 12.9 cm/s (from 65.11 cm/s down to 52.23 cm/s) has been achieved through passivation which effectively increased the open circuit voltage (Voc) from 0.690 to 0.705 V. In this preliminary study, a conversion efficiency of 11.3% of heterojunction with intrinsic thin layer (HIT) solar cell on 10 mm 10 mm n-c-Si wafer has been obtained. 2021, The Korean Institute of Electrical and Electronic Material Engineers.

    Performance measurement system of supply chain - An empirical study
    (2013) ; ;
    Rangaswamy T.M.
    Performance measurement (PM) of supply chain is gaining more interest in researchers and practitioners in this globalised era. It is a powerful tool which helps organisations to effectively and efficiently manage their resource utilisation and achieve their goals and objectives. However, literature reveals that medium scale organisations have paid little attention to performance measurement system (PMS) design and implementation. This paper is an attempt to explore and investigate issues concerning the design and implementation of PMS in Indian manufacturing industry. An empirical survey was conducted in Indian medium scale industries to explore the dimensions and characteristics of PMSs. The study highlighted that medium scale enterprises in India pay less attention to integration of supply chain and use of technology in their business processes. It revealed the continuing importance given to financial measures by these industries despite the increasing emphasis put on non-financial measures in the literature. Copyright 2013 Inderscience Enterprises Ltd.

    One of the biggest challenges faced by the manufacturing industry is to improve productivity and process efficiency. Achieving zero downtime has been the goal of manufacturers since a long time, with the advancement in IoT making sensors inexpensive and compact with Industry 4.0 revolutionizing the complete manufacturing process, real-time monitoring and collection of data from all necessary perspectives can be done remotely. Industries manufacturing at large scale often find it difficult to monitor the condition of the machines and manufacturing process. Downtime due to machine faults and operator negligence contributes to machine inefficiency. This paper presents a multiple sensor-based condition and availability monitoring system deployed on a CNC machine. The major steps for preventive maintenance are daily checking of lubricant level, inspecting of vibration levels, and temperature of the motor. The IoT system uses sensors measuring Vibration, Current, temperature, and coolant levels of CNC machines. A cloud-based platform is created for displaying of real-time graphs of important parameters and Overall Equipment Effectiveness. The data collected from the machine can be used to quickly diagnose the problem and Availability monitoring can help to pinpoint the cause of downtime in the process. The proposed system is useful for remote condition monitoring and data-based decision-making process. 2021 IEEE.
